March: The Lion’s Gate (Movement 1 from Sea to Sky)
The first movement from Ralph Ford’s new work Sea to Sky is the bold opening to this epic composition. Representing this spectacular grandeur of the structure that begins the Sea to Sky Highway, this march is as well performed within the larger work as it is alone. A dynamic choice to display your symphonic band at its best.SKU: AL26772 -

Maverick
The term “maverick” has come to describe someone fiercely independent, and derives from the mid 1800s in the person of Samuel A. Maverick – Texas lawyer, politician, land baron and advocate for Texas independence from Mexico. In this descriptive work for band, Jay Bocook uses a blend of dramatic playfulness along with contrasts and excitement to depict a spirit of independence. Impressive sounding, and still fun!SKU: HL4006603 -

Meridian
Meridian comes very much out of the composer’s love for ostinato, or groove-based, music. Other diverse influences include the World Music-infused jazz of Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, as well as the symphonies of Shostakovich. This exciting and creative work is written with a consistent rhythmic drive throughout, and features a prominent role for piano. Moravian Folk Rhapsody
This work for band is a setting of several delightful Moravian folk dances. “Stoji hruska v oudoli” is a fast-paced two-step dance. “Rozluc se Ancicko” features a clarinet solo in a mournful, yet lilting, slow 6/8 melody. “Preskoda nastokrat” is a highly rhythmic piece in a moderate tempo that features a brief double reed/piccolo section. “Ma zlata maticka” begins with an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo, then includes a folk dance that begins slowly and increases in tempo. “Vojaci jedou” is a proud and uplifting march in 3/4 time. “U Kláštera pole” ends the rhapsody with a lively 2/4 dance that builds to a rousing conclusion. Performers and audiences alike will enjoy the wonderful colors and tonality of this charming music from the Czech Republic. (9:20)SKU: AL22280 -

New Mexico March
One of Sousa’s more obscure marches, it was dedicated to the governor and the people of New Mexico. You’ll hear the characteristic musical sounds of Latin and American Indian populations indigenous to New Mexico at the time. Typical of the march king, you’ll be impressed with the interesting musical turns. (2:55)SKU: ALBDM03001 -

Nexus for Solo Trumpet, Winds and Percussion
The word “nexus” is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins’ students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings – an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressive ballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred’s son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. Dur: 6:00 (Recorded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Wind Symphony – Dr. Sue Samuels, conductor. Christopher Watkins, trumpet soloist.)
Also available for trumpet with piano reduction – HL00231702.

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (March)
Now with a full score provided, here’s the original Fennell arrangement of this revered John Philip Sousa march. Although there was always a harp included in the photographs of the Sousa Band, this is the only march in his repertoire that includes a part for the harpist. The part is included and can be played on a synthesizer. This one’s a real barn burner. (3:20)SKU: ALBDM04013 -

Northwoods: Of Might and Mettle
This is a musical depiction of the day of a lumberjack in the late 1800s during the great logging drives in Wisconsin. The work begins with “Daylight in the Swamp,” a mysterious setting reminiscent of the early morning conditions. It then transitions to “Waking the Camp” and develops to “Felling the Trees,” a very dynamic segment. “The Ice Breaks” and “On the River” draw the composition to a serious conclusion. A most creative work. This is Robert W. Smith at his very best. (6:46)SKU: ALBDM02036
