Moravian Folk Rhapsody
This work for band is a setting of several delightful Moravian folk dances. “Stoji hruska v oudoli” is a fast-paced two-step dance. “Rozluc se Ancicko” features a clarinet solo in a mournful, yet lilting, slow 6/8 melody. “Preskoda nastokrat” is a highly rhythmic piece in a moderate tempo that features a brief double reed/piccolo section. “Ma zlata maticka” begins with an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo, then includes a folk dance that begins slowly and increases in tempo. “Vojaci jedou” is a proud and uplifting march in 3/4 time. “U Kláštera pole” ends the rhapsody with a lively 2/4 dance that builds to a rousing conclusion. Nexus for Solo Trumpet, Winds and Percussion
The word “nexus” is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins’ students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings – an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressive ballad theme.The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred’s son. Although there was always a harp included in the photographs of the Sousa Band, this is the only march in his repertoire that includes a part for the harpist. Northwoods: Of Might and Mettle
This is a musical depiction of the day of a lumberjack in the late 1800s during the great logging drives in Wisconsin. The work begins with “Daylight in the Swamp,” a mysterious setting reminiscent of the early morning conditions. It then transitions to “Waking the Camp” and develops to “Felling the Trees,” a very dynamic segment. “The Ice Breaks” and “On the River” draw the composition to a serious conclusion.
